Ryan Gosling promoted his upcoming movie Project Hail Mary with a spoof Jeopardy clip featuring him answering a question about former Boston Red Sox pitcher Jim Lonborg.
The clip shows Gosling writing down “IDK” when asked what injury Lonborg suffered in 1967.
Jeopardy host Ken Jennings responded by telling Gosling he had successfully thrown a hail mary with an answer that could also stand for “internal derangement of the knee,” a medical term for tears to knee ligaments.
Lonborg pitched 15 MLB seasons between 1965 and 1979, a stretch highlighted by his Cy Young Award campaign with the Red Sox in 1967.
Shortly after pitching a 3.16 ERA and earning a 22-9 record in 39 starts that season, Lonborg tore the ACL in his left knee in a skiing accident.
The former pitcher said in a 2020 interview with WKXL NH Talk Radio’s “Press Pass” that surgeons at the time didn’t know how to repair or rehab ACL tears, and that it took him years to learn how to effectively pitch with his hurt knee.
Lonborg, now 83, was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002.
